What is SSL certificate ?

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate is used to encrypt sensitive information, such as credit card details, transmitted over the internet. This will give confidence to your customers/buyers to enter sensitive information on your web site.

How do to tell if a site is secure ?

A secure site is usually has an URL that is preceded by https:// instead of the normal http://. You will also see secure pad lock icon () shown in your web browser. The SSL certificate is used to ensure the connection is safe and secure.

Remember: Seeing the secure pad lock icon appear does not mean a secure connection is always in place. If you click on it you should see the web site address for the site of the server that purchased the certificate being used. You should compare this with the web site address shown in your browser tool bar. Other info you can check is the validity of the SSL certificate.
